This weekend I learned that chains are a pain in the ass.
And even though Yosemite is gorgeous in the winter (and the crowds are largely contained), it's better to go in the spring or summer simply because the days are longer, and there's no point after dark.
I also learned that my kid doesn't like snow.

Perhaps he has memories of the snow we suffered in Yosemite when we weren't expecting it. I'll believe that the mountains are beautiful with snow on them.
Yosemite is gorgeous in the winter. You have to just be prepared for long nights of drinking and games by the fire. It is easier to get sunset shots before dinner, though.
